What IMO Has To Say

The MARPOL Convention 73/78, together with other community regulations (Directive 2000/59) obliges ports to establish facilities to ensure the complete and correct management of ship-generated waste. The typology of ship-generated waste is classified in a number of annexes to the Marpol Convention (Annexes I-VI).

IMO has recognized that provision of reception facilities is crucial for effective MARPOL implementation, and the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has strongly encouraged Member States, particularly those Parties to MARPOL as port States, to fulfil their treaty obligations on providing adequate reception facilities.

Directorate General of Shipping

1. Compliance of Port Reception Facility under the MARPOL 73/78 is the responsibility of the vessels, terminals as well as the Port.

2. India’s Coastal and Marine waters are inhabited with more than 5000 species. It is our duty to protect and conserve these habitats from pollution from ships.

3. MARPOL puts an obligation on parts of all parties to the Convention to ensure provision of adequate facility at Port and terminal to meet the needs of ships using them without causing undue delay.

4. With effect from September 2022, Barges will be deployed at New Mangalore Port to collect the waste oil from vessels at anchorage & SPM from ships calling at New Mangalore Port & also from the passing vessels.

5. We propose to supply fresh water to ships at anchorage and SPM. This facility will be available during fair weather only
